Contrary to others, I don't let words like "Made in China" cloud my judgement of the product itself. Otherwise, I'd have to give nearly everything a bad rating since most is made overseas today. That said, there's nothing inherently wrong with this set of Footprint woodworking planes. They're certainly no worse, or better, than similarly priced products I've purchased from other manufacturers. All required a bit of work before that first use and these were no exception.

The soles (bottoms) of the block plane (7" long x 2" wide / 1.5" blade) and smooth plane (9.75 x 2.5" / 2" blade) arrived perfectly flat, while the sole of the larger jack plane (13.75 x 2.5" / 2" blade) was bowed slightly towards the toe and heel. While some prefer that slight toe to heel curve on larger planes (supposedly allows tool to slide easier on work surface) and others insist this type of curve doesn't really matter, I'm simply used to a perfectly flat surface. Therefore, I flattened the sole (removed that curve) by repeatedly sliding the plane over several strips (coarse to fine) of adhesive-backed sandpaper attached to a flat surface. There are videos on video websites describing this sandpaper flattening process.

The blades were also fairly sharp, but I worked them over with waterstones anyway to remove any microscopic rust, oxidation, or whatever from storage before arrival. Honing with waterstones will nearly always give an extremely sharp edge. Spent another few minutes removing the old protective oil on each plane, applying new oil, and adjusting the reassembled planes to my liking. Afterwards, the planes were put to work and have performed flawlessly since - several months now.
