Okay, I've now had this planer for 6 months, and I also have a monster 6" Makita planer. These planers have different applications, so there's no point in comparing them. But with both--there's a learning curve. You have to understand how an electric planer works to make it work for you. Planers have two surfaces, a fixed back surface that is level with the blade, and an adjustable front surface which moves up from the blade. The blade sits between them. If you start on the edge of a board at the front surface, it's going to take off however much depth you have adjusted it to the full length of the board. However, there are times when you may just want to pull out a slightly high spot. You can do this by leveling the planer on its back surface, then coming over the rise, or adjusting the front end to a shallow depth, then easing the planer into and out of the rise.

Okay, this is not a lesson in how to use a planer--it's a review of the GMC. My point of the above is to not blame the planer if things aren't quite working out. It took me a while to learn to use mine, and now I love it. As for the GMC, well, in my opinion, it is one of the unsung values out there. For a very low price, you get a quiet, powerful planer that spits chips either way--comes with a chip bag too. And 3 blades--well, what can I say? Never a nick, regardless of which way I've planed (with or against the grain). It will take the Bosch Woodrazr tungsten carbide blades, which is good to know once the HSS blades that come with the planer (2 sets of reversibles) wear out. This planer deserves 5 stars, but for some reason Amazon will let me edit my review but not upgrade my rating. If you are a beginner to electric planing, check this one out. It won't break the bank. That said, I would have to recommend this planer to even an experienced woodworker. Barring a high-end Festool, it is difficult for me to imagine what else one could want in a planer.
